Some notes
|
So, here are some notes to keep in mind as we throw around ideas for RS8 (if you recall, X13 confirmed RS7 was RS6 + fakecaptcha):
Scalable: It needs to be a fulfilling website to exist whether there are no members or many members. RPG Sauce does not have enough contacts with other communities or even members who are on enough forums to just have all our members put RPG Sauce signatures on all their accounts.
Maintenance: One should be able to sufficiently update the website in ten minutes per day, but more people could update for longer periods of time and it wouldn't be awkward. But, anymore mandatory minimum time is not going to happen with the amount of staff we have, or with our busy schedules. Realism is the key.
The thing I'm going through right now is content. Once we know what we're hosting we know what features to flesh out and we can begin designing the UI and all that other shit. Right now I'm still considering having it related to almost everything RPG-related, and let content be produced in a community-format. It'll be like an RPG blogosphere, but also contain unique features for developers and other things. The issue is that the website should still be alive even with 0 members and just a single staff member.
On a last note, ask yourself the following questions? And comment the answers if you kick severe amounts of ass.
1. What website would be so useful a tool to you (and so customizable) you'd just have to sign up for yourself or for your project?
2. What website would be so beautiful looking that the aesthetics alone would speak of a “hip” RPG nerd community?
3. What website would be so user-centric that you felt it would allow you to stroke your ego as much as your Myspace or Facebook pages already do?
In theory, if we get any one of those, we're pretty successful. If we get all three, well damn.

Well.
Let's see.
What would it take?
1. Content
2. Users
3. Staff that care
4. Content
5. Flexibility
6. User Friendly navigation
7. Content
8. A community centric design and architecture
9. A project management system that covered games, makers, and other things that could allow team coordination.
10. Fucking Content.

Linggy, we need suggestions not regurgitation of what we've all stated before.

I can see this going far if you give excuses as to why a suggestion is wrong vs. what's right with it.
I don't care how fucking awesome you make your little community script. If it has no content, it is worthless.

If we are really trying to get all Web 2.0-y (I fucking hate that buzzword but what can one do?), the users would supply the content.
Of course, we few remaining members aren't very good at making users feel welcome (look how pissy Linguar still is, and who can blame him?).
Maybe we should give out punch and pie instead of calling people gay.

Yeah Krez, we obviously need a new community forcing our old angry one into an elitist staff that makes fun of members behind their back and bans people at whim.
Linguar isn't gay but he is creeping me out because somehow he ignores two posts that are completely dedicated to what content we are putting on the site and when I point this out he continues to rant.
Ling: the second, third, and forth paragraphs of this post deal with content, with the fourth paragraph specifically using the word content. The fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth paragraphs of the previous news post also talked about content.
I guess this goes to show you how much we've damaged him. He attacks us on sight without reason. We really need to stop being dicks to people.

Or you're failing to realize that irregardless of how much effort you put into the community if it doesn't ever change within regular fashion, it won't matter.
People are spurred by change, without change things stagnate, as this community so perfectly proves.
I think it's also more accurate to note that you are ignoring me. You ignore me on AIM to the point of, literally, no response, but that's another matter entirely. You aren't even listening to the fact that you can talk all you want, but until you act, it's nothing but that, talk.
You don't address what I'm saying, you simply point to how you said something else before that has little to do with what I stated.
In 2006 X13 talked about the next RPG Source aka RS7, and before that it was mentioned again.
Before all this there was talk of RS6, of which I'm not even sure what happened to it (I don't think this website is RS6).
The point I'm trying to make is talk is great, but action is better. You can talk all you want about what content you'll have, but that doesn't mean you'll have a lot of, or good, content. That's all in the effort side of things once the Content management system is finished. That's assuming that part even gets finished.

We're not planning on depending on community. Read both of the posts again: no community is going to be built unless we have content, and we need to know what content will keep users. That is the entire theme of both posts.
People are spurred by change, without change things stagnate, as this community so perfectly proves.
Of course. How many strong communities have you developed, by the way? If you want to help, help. But don't throw out empty sour and bitter comments about the Sauce. Sour and bitter comments themselves are fine, but not just rhetorical ones. Considering we're one of the only communities on the Internet that has solely survived with just four members for four years, we did something right. And the fact we see where we went wrong and have detailed it over and over again also shows you're telling us what we've known for a long time now.
I think it's also more accurate to note that you are ignoring me. You ignore me on AIM to the point of, literally, no response, but that's another matter entirely. You aren't even listening to the fact that you can talk all you want, but until you act, it's nothing but that, talk.
Ehm, there is a reason we're setting up an SVN server (thank our old member Kurai), and a reason we're scheduling for when we're free. It's because we're ready to get things done. We've never even bothered saying, “HEY I AM FREE TO ACTUALLY CODE X AND Y,” because our seriousness was talk, not code.
As far as ignoring you on AIM, most people when they message someone and AIM don't get a response they move on. Additionally in most cases (including yours), it's nothing personal, if I am going to respond it's because I am willing to give the person at hand the necessary attention for a strong conversation.
I've been busy in the last month (six classes at university, about to land a good job hopefully, voted president of the LGBT organization at my university, and voted as Director of Public Relations for the Multicultural Council at my university as well), and I haven't felt like talking to a whole lot of people because of stress and just a shit load of personal issues. Instead of respecting the fact that I didn't answer your messages, you obsessively messaged me, eventually culminating with the "ARE YOU IGNORING ME?" messages, which were borderline creepy. You forgot to add up the logic that you weren't blocked. Why would anyone choose to hate someone on AIM or MSN when they could simply block them? Logic, use your logic.
Linguar, I have nothing against you, you're an intelligent man. Give me some personal space, please.

Sour and bitter? Perhaps.
Then again my view of this place hasn't changed much since its administrator decided to abandon it; as far as it surviving, that's mostly due to the never present administrator paying the bill every month. It's no real effort of your own that has caused the website to remain online. If you're now paying for it, then I'll amend my statement.
As far as the AIM goes and your personal space. I can understand ignoring one, two, three messages, but then again, a little bit of a response of saying you're alive is nice. You're right, perhaps I shouldn't give a flying fuck. You're just some person I don't know online.
For what it's worth, I wish you luck.

AH FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!
Just lost a HUGE post detailing all sorts of GREAT STUFF about this.
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!
Well it is too late to try and recreate it, I need a couple hours of sleep before I wake up to take my daughter to school.
I suggest we find a better medium for this discussion (the real one not the catfight).

Well, here's an abridged version of what I recall from my previous (lost) brain dump:
Stop fighting ladies, blah blah insult blah...
I disagree Linguar; while we do need content, our "little community script" has to be the priority (otherwise how will we know what content to put where, etc). And talking it all out ahead of time (instead of the immediate action you seem to be calling for, as if you care about this site (anymore?)) is not a bad thing. For one, we are busy with other projects, and can fit in this pre-design discussion easily in our free time. Secondly, it will give us a clear and distinct goal for when we DO have the time to get coding, without which any project of a decent size is doomed.
And then...
We don't need content at this point so much as a determination of the type and format of content we want. Which boils down to (IMHO, and I'm sure I'm forgetting things, and some of it might not be good after all, but hey it is a brain dump):
1) Wiki - Wiki is a good thing I think. But, the current one is full of inside jokes and ball busting of members / previous members / members of other semi-related communities, instead of actual RPG related information. Which might scare away or disgust potential new users. So, we should start a new Wiki with actual on-topic information. If we want to keep the old one for posterity / shits-n-giggles that is fine, but it should be separate and possibly labeled with a "warning: here be dragons (i.e. don't read this if you aren't interested in random absurdity)".
2) Forum - Too easy. But we ought to review the categories / folders to include I think. I don't have any specific complaints or suggestions, I just think we might as well revamp it since we can, get it more in line with our goals. Also, perhaps we ought to migrate all the old stuff into the new system, but maybe not (I wonder what the signal to noise ration is in the current message board, and if that is what we are going for anyway)... it's up in the air AFAIAC.
3) Blogs - All Web 2.0-y (argh HATE HATE HATE) and probably a good idea to give all members a blog if they like. Maybe constrain it so they can't use it exclusively to talk about cereal or how their bff dumped them (it should be related to RPGs or games or something at least SOMETIMES). Also, see the next thing in my list.
4) Articles / Reviews / etc - I think we might not need these per se. It is butta bitch getting anyone to write them up, and thus we end up with little to no content. My thought is that we should allow users to tag their blog posts as an "Article", "Review", and probably some other tags, and then list THOSE as the articles / reviews / whatever. Basically, predefine some tags for the blogs and put links on the main page that filter / search by those tags. Instant Articles section, all contributed by users like you! Perhaps instead of automatically letting them tag something as such, someone should check it out first, then apply it to the main listings (just so dickface asshats can't spam our "sections" with crap). This can easily be extended into things like the "mailbag", "editorials" etc we use to have going here.
4) Makers section - I like the idea of this... but is it kept up-to-date? Also, I think we should include more information about each one, maybe screenshots, reviews by people who used them before, etc. I just checked and see that this is already there (sort of), so maybe this is just a presentation thing.
5) Games - Same thing as above more or less. We can make them a lot more enticing (and therefore more valuable posting the game to our site) if we pretty it up, and include more info.
6) News / Main page - I'm not sure why we have 3 separate news sections here at the moment; my 2 cents (worth less now thanks to Congress and the Fed) is that they ought to be merged. Maybe we can have the system automatically post a news item pointing to any new "article", "review" etc.
7) I think that is all; at this point I complained about the time it was and lack of sleep I was going to get, maybe cussed a bit, and then deleted all my hard work / babbling. Speaking of which, why not move this to the forums? Get a bit of a wider view of the messages.
